Comment on Hugo Weavings frustration at NSW govenment for not supporting the film industry

Uproar from one of the leading members of the film industry, Hugo Weaving, should hopefully be a wake up call to authorities. Weaving who has always been a strong supporter for the Australian film and television industry, drew attention to the opportunities Sydney is being offered but not accepting in terms of supporting the industry. Hopefully the state government will be able to wake up and see that films shot in Sydney will not only bring interest to the struggling industry at the moment but also bring attention to tourism within the area. These are all positives for the city, apart from a few inconvenient days for the production of the shoot the city and industry would benefit from more films being shot in Sydney.

HUGO WEAVING has lashed out at the NSW Government for failing to support the state's film industry.

The Tender Hook directed by Jonathan Ogilvie, was forced to shoot in Melbourne despite being set in 1920s Sydney.

"It was just financially more viable for the film-makers to switch even after having found the locations in and around Sydney that they wanted to shoot," he told the Herald's film writer, Garry Maddox, yesterday.

"It would pay off to have a little bit more connection with the film industry. I think the State Government has been neglectful … probably not wilfully neglectful, just probably ignorant of film and what it can do for the industry and for the state in a broader way."
